Remember the days of dumb phones. You used an operator, a rotary dial and later push buttons, it was so simple. Today, we have smartphones (Android, Apple, Blackberry, Microsoft), various tablets, and so on. You have to be vigilant to keep your personal data safe.
To help you the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released a guide entitled "Smartphone Security Checker." You select your type of phone (Android, Apple, Blackberry, or Microsoft) and are provided with information to help you secure data on your phone.
Ten areas are addressed in the article:
1. Set pins and passwords.
2. Do not modify built-in security features.
3. Backup and secure data.
4. Only install apps from trusted sources.
5. Understand app permissions before accepting.
6. Install security apps that enable remote location and wiping.
7. Install system updates when released.
8. Beware of open wi-fi networks.
9. Wipe data prior to donating, selling, or recycling old devices.
10. Report stolen devices.
